Google's Gemini AI introduced Nano Banana prompts that allow users to create Diwali-themed family portraits from uploaded selfies.

The tool, part of the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, processes text prompts to add festive elements such as diyas, rangoli and fireworks to images.

Diwali 2025 occurred on October 20, marking the Hindu festival of lights with celebrations across India and globally. The Nano Banana trend gained traction on social media platforms in the days leading up to the festival, as users shared AI-generated portraits depicting traditional attire and gatherings.

Users access the feature via the Gemini app by uploading a photo and entering a prompt. For example, one prompt states: "An Indian family of four parents and two children, celebrating Diwali outdoors in their courtyard, dressed in elegant traditional attire (silk Saree, Kurta-Pajama, and Sherwani), surrounded by glowing diyas and fairy lights. Fireworks sparkle in the night sky, marigold garlands hang across the gate, with a starry background, soft golden lighting, warm bokeh effect, cinematic realism." Another prompt reads: "Set the scene with soft lantern light, vibrant rangoli, and festive attire bathed in golden hour glow."

The trend involves transforming selfies into scenes like family puja or night markets. Social media users reported high engagement, with portraits described as realistic and shareable.
